Ohio Wine

Ohio's wine country offers a fascinating exploration of terroir, with five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs): Lake Erie, Grand River Valley, Isle St. George, Loramie Creek, and Ohio River Valley. Situated approximately between 38° and 42° north latitude, Ohio experiences a predominantly humid continental climate, with cold winters, warm summers, and significant seasonal temperature variations. Along the northern shoreline, Lake Erie moderates temperatures, delays spring budburst, and extends the autumn growing season, creating favorable conditions for Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc. Glacially deposited soils, rolling slopes, and effective cold-air drainage further influence vineyard suitability, particularly in the Grand River Valley. Farther south, the Ohio River Valley experiences warmer conditions, although humidity and fungal disease pressure present additional challenges. What truly sparked my curiosity, however, was Ohio's embrace of hybrid grape varieties. My wine-tasting adventures throughout Wisconsin, exploring varieties such as Petite Pearl, Frontenac, and Marquette, have given me a growing appreciation for the innovation behind cold-climate viticulture. I am particularly fascinated by the University of Minnesota's grape-breeding program and its development of cold-hardy varieties such as Marquette, Frontenac, and La Crescent, designed to withstand harsh winters while producing wines of impressive character. Naturally, when I discovered Gervasi Vineyard's Reserve Marquette, I couldn't resist. Having explored Marquette in Wisconsin, I was eager to experience another interpretation of this intriguing grape in Ohio. From a WSET Level 3 perspective, these hybrids offer a compelling lesson in how grape genetics, climate, site selection, and winemaking decisions interact to determine wine style and quality. For me, the excitement of wine exploration lies not only in discovering new regions but also in recognizing familiar grape varieties expressing themselves in entirely different environments. Ohio proved that great wine discoveries don't always require a passport—sometimes they simply require a little curiosity and a willingness to venture beyond the familiar. 

Three glasses, a little Ohio wine education, and a memorable tasting in the cave at Gervasi Vineyard. During Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Weekend in Canton, taking a break from football to explore Ohio's wine country, discovering a reserve hybrid, Marquette, and the fascinating history of winemaking along the shores of Lake Erie. It was a perfect blend of football, wine, and discovery.

I was impressed with historic downtown Cleveland and the beautiful Lake Erie waterfront and spending an incredible day at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where decades of legendary music brought back memories of the soundtrack of in my life. The Fifty Years of SNL exhibit is fantastic, if you get a chance to experience it. Of course, no visit to Cleveland would be complete without exploring its rich Eastern European culinary heritage, and we happily indulged in some delicious pierogies along the way. However, the highlight of the trip was the visit to Canton, where the excitement of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game and induction festivities brought football history to life. As a former football coach and proud South Dakota State Jackrabbit, celebrating fellow Jackrabbit Adam Vinatieri alongside legends Drew Brees, Roger Craig, Larry Fitzgerald, and Luke Kuechly made the experience particularly meaningful. Walking among football's greatest players and reflecting on their remarkable careers was a special experience. From rock and roll to football legends, pierogies to Marquette, this was a weekend that celebrated everything I love about traveling: discovering new places with a special brother, reconnecting with old passions, and, naturally, finding another great glass of wine along the way.

A Personal Moment with Football Greatness! One of the most memorable moments of our Canton weekend was quietly welcoming the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees as they entered the stadium. No roaring crowds, just an up-close opportunity to acknowledge some of football's greatest legends. The highlight? Sharing a fist bump with Roger Craig. Sometimes the quietest moments create the greatest memories. What an experience to share with a brother and fantasy football rival.

A golden moment in Canton was seeing Roger Craig takes center stage alongside an extraordinary gathering of San Francisco 49ers legends: Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley, Patrick Willis, Bryant Young, and Eddie DeBartolo Jr. Nine iconic figures representing the proud legacy of the Red and Gold. What an incredible moment to capture in person.

A Taste of Cleveland’s History and Culture! Enjoying delicious pierogies at the highly rated Atlantic Beer Garden at Forest City Brewery in Cleveland’s historic Duck Island neighborhood. More than just a comfort food, these little pockets of goodness tell the story of the city’s rich Eastern European immigrant heritage, where generations of families brought their culinary traditions to Northeast Ohio. Great food, historic surroundings, and a little cultural exploration made this a memorable stop on the weekend romp to the National Football League's Hall of Fame 2026 Induction Weekend.

From Cleveland's rich rock and roll musical history and delicious pierogies to the unforgettable football celebrations in Canton, every stop was special on this trip. Yet, it was our wine-tasting experience at Gervasi Vineyard that added an unexpected layer of discovery. Exploring Ohio's wine country, revisiting my fascination with the cold-hardy Marquette grape, and comparing its expression with wines I've tasted in Wisconsin reminded me why I love the world of wine. Every region has a story to tell, shaped by its climate, soils, people, and traditions. Sharing these experiences with my brother made the journey even more meaningful. I came to Ohio for football, rediscovered the soundtrack of my youth, embraced its culinary heritage, and left with a deeper appreciation for an emerging wine region. Cheers to Ohio, new discoveries, and the next great glass of wine!
